Jahmyr Gibbs Addresses Lions Training Camp Hold-In Amid Contract Talks

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was asked by reporters about his current training camp hold-in during his team's practice on Monday.

Per ESPN's Eric Woodyard, Gibbs said, "Only time will tell," regarding when he will return to the field. In addition, the former Alabama star said, "It's not about that," when asked whether he needed a new contract before suiting up again.

"What I'm ... aiming towards? Ah, I don't know," Gibbs added.

Gibbs is entering his fourth NFL season after the Lions selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Last year, Gibbs amassed 1,839 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns.

He's one of the league's best offensive weapons and is certainly deserving of a new contract. Right now, Gibbs is entering the fourth year of a five-year rookie deal after the Lions picked up their option on his contract for the 2027 season.

Gibbs is set to make $5.7 million in 2026 and $14.3 million in 2027.

When training camp practices began last week, head coach Dan Campbell told reporters that he wasn't concerned about Gibbs' absence.

"You guys know how we feel about Gibbs…we'll take this [extension stuff] as it comes. … It'll come as it comes. ... This is both sides working through something… that's where it is," Campbell said.

Gibbs isn't the only high-profile running back holding in, as Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson is doing the same in search of a new deal.

One can reasonably expect that both players will receive new contracts before the season. In the meantime, both are holding in while remaining present at training camp.

As far as the Lions are concerned, former Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco currently leads the team's running back group during practice with Gibbs holding in. Pacheco arrived in Detroit after signing a one-year, $1.8 million contract following four years with the Chiefs.
