Mariners Trade for Taylor Ward Amid Standings Race, Latest MLB Rumors on Orioles Return

The Seattle Mariners traded for outfielder Taylor Ward as part of a swap with the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Baltimore received right-handed pitching prospects Alex Hoppe, Harrison Kreiling and Brock Moore in the deal, per MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo.

The Mariners are looking to make a postseason push, as they current sit two games back from the final American League Wild Card spot with a 55-58 record.

They're also just three games behind the Houston Astros for the AL West lead.

Meanwhile, the Orioles parted ways with Ward less than one year after they landed him in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels. Baltimore holds the No. 4 spot in the AL East standings with a record of 54-58.

Ward is currently set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has recorded seven home runs, 20 doubles and 30 RBI while slashing .246/.383/.346 in 111 games during his 2026 campaign. He also leads the American League with 87 walks.

Ward has particularly found success against left-handed pitching this season, owning an OPS of .839 against lefties.

He should be able to help a Mariners squad that has a mere .649 OPS as a team against left-handers in 2026, ranking No. 29 in the majors.

Seattle will also hope that Ward can showcase his power at the plate more often following the change of scenery, as he amassed 98 home runs across his final four seasons with the Angels from 2022-25.

As for Hoppe, he owns a 5.79 ERA in 24 appearances with the Mariners this year despite averaging 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Kreiling has suited up in three games for Seattle, allowing two earned runs in 8.2 innings of work.

Moore has spent the majority of his 2026 campaign with Double-A Arkansas, compiling a 5.56 ERA in 18 contests.
