The 38-year-old Williams is starting to show his age but bounced back nicely after injuries limited him to 10 appearances in 2024. According to ESPN, he was 20th among tackles in pass-block win rate and sixth in run-block win rate. The Niners also tied for the fifth-fewest sacks allowed (27).
Executives, coaches and scouts from around the NFL voted Williams second in the annual positional rankings from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
"I don't see a lot of drop-off — he still operates without the need for any help in pass protection, he still mauls people, he's still got light feet for his size, still has the capacity to dominate," one coach said.
San Francisco saw fit to give Williams a two-year, $50 million extension that keeps him under contract through 2028. That will see him suiting up into his age-40 season.
You wouldn't bet against the 12-time Pro Bowler continuing to be an effective blocker by that point.
Last season brought more of the same for Herbert in a few different respects, not all of them positive.
He threw for 3,727 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, and his 60.6 QBR was 13th among qualified starters at ESPN.com.
The 28-year-old continued to be an effective signal-caller who made some eye-popping throws, and his supporting cast did him few favors. Starting tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt were both lost to season-ending injuries, and nobody on the Chargers cracked 1,000 receiving yards.
Still, the Herbert skeptics will point to the fact he has yet to win a playoff game, and his performance in a Wild Card Round defeat left a lot to be desired. He went 19-of-31 for 159 yards and was sacked six times.
Maybe first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is the coach who can bring the best out in Herbert over a full season. If that happens, he'll be headed for his highest ranking yet in the Top 100.
