Yankees Reportedly Trade for Luis Garcia Jr., Nationals' Full Return Revealed Ahead of MLB Deadline

The New York Yankees are acquiring Washington Nationals first baseman Luis García Jr. ahead of the MLB trade deadline, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Passan reported the Nationals will receive four prospects in return, with The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum revealing the players involved:

According to MLB.com, right-handed pitchers Jack Cebert (No. 14) and Ben Grable (No. 25) were among the Yankees' top 30 prospects.

García had also drawn interest from other clubs including the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

García was a late scratch from the Nationals' Sunday game against the Atlanta Braves.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale had also named the Arizona Diamondbacks as a club with interest in García.

García, whose contract is under team control through 2027, was leading the NL with a .560 slugging percentage at the time of Sunday's late scratch.

He is batting a career-best .283 with 23 home runs and 76 RBI through 104 games of his seventh season with the Nationals.

García has spent this season as a first baseman or designated hitter for the Nationals, but spent time earlier in his career at shortstop and second base.

Giancarlo Stanton, who regularly functions as designated hitter in the Bronx, has been on IL since April.

The Yankees have been rotating Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice at first base while often using the DH spot for either player or Amed Rosario.

García has found most success against right-handed pitchers (.295 BA compared to .218 BA against lefties), while Goldschmidt sees a dramatic improvement against southpaws (.309 BA against left-handed pitchers compared to .201 BA against right-handers).

The Athletic's Brendan Kuty the Yankees would "almost definitely" split García and Goldschmidt's starts at first base based on the opposing pitcher while using Rice in the DH spot.

That arrangement could potentially change following the return of Stanton, who as of Sunday had resumed hitting but has no confirmed return timeline.
