Andy Reid Assesses Patrick Mahomes' Injury Recovery After Knee Surgery amid Chiefs Training Camp
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is "still progressing" in his recovery from knee surgery while participating in training camp, head coach Andy Reid told ESPN's Dan Graziano.
"He's doing a great job. He's really doing everything that he normally does, and doing it well," Reid told Graziano about Mahomes. "So, we're happy with that.
"We know he's still progressing through it, but he sure looks sharp out here."
Mahomes underwent surgery to repair a torn left ACL alongside a torn LCL in December.
He was cleared as of July 24 to fully participate in training camp as doctors monitored his return, according to Reid (h/t Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein).
Mahomes said before training camp his goal was to prove during the regular season he was the same quarterback as before the surgery "if not better."
"Just keeping an eye on him, and then letting the doctors guide us from there," Reid told Graziano Saturday. "As long as he's safe, that's what we're looking at. Right now, for what we're doing, he's safe to roll."
Reid also told Graziano he was still undecided as to whether Mahomes would see any preseason action. The Chiefs open the exhibition slate Aug. 15 against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Chiefs' priority will be getting Mahomes in the lineup in time to open the regular season Sept. 14 against the Denver Broncos. Graziano reported Friday that Mahomes' progress so far in training camp "really does point, barring some kind of setback, to a Week 1 return."
