Shedeur Sanders-Deshaun Watson QB1 Battle Addressed by Browns HC Todd Monken in New Video

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken discussed the ongoing battle between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson for the team's starting quarterback job.

"It's going fine," Monken told reporters Saturday. "I don't think you're really going to know until you get through all the installs."

Watson has been with the Browns since 2022, while Sanders started seven games as a rookie in 2025.

Cleveland has alternated between the two quarterbacks in its first-team offense throughout the opening days of training camp. Watson practiced with the starters on Friday before Sanders worked with the first-string offense on Saturday.

It's worth noting that Watson has struggled with ball security during the beginning of camp, tossing three interceptions in his two practice days with the starting offense before getting picked off again on Saturday (h/t Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal).

Watson didn't suit up for the Browns last season as he recovered from Achilles surgery that he underwent in Jan. 2025.

Cleveland used three different starting signal-callers during its 2025 campaign, closing out the year with Sanders under center.

The former Colorado standout completed 56.6 percent of his throws for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions across eight total appearances.

The Browns eventually brought in Monken as their new head coach after parting ways with Kevin Stefanski.

Both Sanders and Watson should receive extended opportunities to gain an edge in the positional battle once Cleveland's preseason action begins, starting with a clash against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15.
