New Red Sox Rumors on MLB Trade Deadline Strategy, Potential Targets for 'Decisive Move'

The Boston Red Sox could potentially make a big splash on the trade market ahead of the 2026 deadline.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Thursday that the Red Sox are among the teams "likeliest to make a decisive move" prior to the deadline.

Passan also listed Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto, Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña, Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams and Marlins catcher Liam Hicks as possible targets for Boston.

The Red Sox are in need of help at shortstop, as Trevor Story hasn't appeared in a game since May 14 after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia.

While Andruw Monasterio has recently excelled as Boston's starting shortstop, the team could still add more help at the position for a postseason push.

The Angels have struggled this year and currently sit at 42-67, but Neto has continued to be a bright spot for them.

He's recorded 19 home runs, 21 doubles and 49 RBI while posting a .757 OPS in 106 games this year. Neto's track record may also be enticing for Boston, as he's finished with at least 23 homers in each of the past two years.

Lopez has thrived at the plate this season, earning his first career All-Star nod.

His 138 hits are the most among all MLB players, while his 27 doubles are also tied for the most in the majors. Lopez has amassed seven triples and nine homers to go along with a .329 batting average.

Peña received All-Star recognition for his 2025 campaign before racking up 10 doubles, 12 home runs and 31 RBI in 62 games this year. He also boasts a .311/.364/.502 slash line.

Abrams would bring more power to Boston's lineup, as his 27 home runs and .561 slugging percentage both rank No. 1 among shortstops in 2026.

If the Red Sox focus on bringing in a catcher, Hicks is a possibility. The 27-year-old has picked up 14 homers and 60 RBI while slashing .279/.358/.435 in 2026.

Boston has gone 19-4 in the month of July, entering the American League postseason picture after sitting at just 29-43 through the team's first 72 contests.

The 2026 MLB trade deadline is on Monday at 6 p.m. ET.
