Van Gaal Confirms Smalling Injury
Tuesday, Dec. 8
Smalling suffered the injury in United's 3-2 loss to Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Dec. 8, with Van Gaal noting after the match: "[Matteo] Darmian has a hamstring injury and Smalling probably a groin problem," per the club's official Twitter account.
Smalling Key to United's Success
The centre-back has been a key figure in United's defence this season, having been virtually ever-present, save for a 70-minute showing in the Capital One Cup against Ipswich Town. He has also played a vital role in the Red Devils conceding just 10 Premier League goals across 15 matches.
United have just enough defensive cover to mitigate loss of Smalling in the short-term. That said, the side doesn't possess the same sharpness at the back when he's missing.
Smalling is key to United's potential title bid, and indeed, the success of Van Gaal.
