Top MLB Trade Rumors and Predicting Deals That Will Impact World Series 2026 Standings

The right trade can turn any MLB team from a pretender to a contender for a World Series title as the deadline approaches on Monday, August 3, several teams like their situations but are looking to add one more piece to put their championship aspirations over the top.

From superstar starting pitchers to a shortstop to sure up the defense, the rumor mill is buzzing with the potential for high-stakes, high-profile deals.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported, "Executives who have dealt with the Angels sense that the club isn't closing the door on Neto but is prioritizing starters Reid Detmers and José Soriano in trade talks" (h/t MLB.com).

The 25-year-old shortstop has three years of control left on his deal, so it is unlikely that Los Angeles will let him go without a sizeable haul in return. Add 19 home runs, 46 RBI, and 14 stolen bases to the mix, and you have a player whose value continues to rise ahead of the trade deadline.

The Boston Red Sox have repeatedly been linked to Neto, thanks in large part to their need at the position. Sherman's report also links the AL East team to Houston's Jeremy Pena, Washington's CJ Abrams, and Miami's Otto Lopez, but Neto has by far been the most consistently discussed in relation to the Red Sox.

While he would be a significant upgrade for Boston, which has seen big-money starting shortstop Trevor Story suffer from injury and diminished play, and assist in their efforts to climb back into World Series contention after a disastrous start to the season, the team has not shown a propensity to be a big spender, so fans should set their expectations to be realistic regarding a move of this magnitude.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported on Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, "The Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are among the clubs expected to inquire on Skubal, the reigning AL back-to-back Cy Young winner."'

He added, "Multiple teams planned to reach out to Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris after the Tigers lost their third straight game Monday night, according to people briefed on those clubs' intentions who were granted anonymity for their candor."

Skubal is one of the game's best pitchers and has been buzzed about as a trade candidate dating back to last season, before he won a much-publicized arbitration case against the Tigers.

Not as dominant as he has been in his consecutive Cy Young seasons of 2024 and '25, Skubal is still 7-5 with a 2.70 ERA and an 0.92 WHIP this season and will fetch a huge haul if a deal gets done.

The teams reported by Rosenthal are all contending squads with World Series aspirations. Should a team like the Dodgers acquire him, any drama surrounding who will hoist the Commissioner's Trophy at the end of the season would essentially be out the window.

The Brewers and Rays are organizations that do not simply give up young prospects to land a big fish, though their standings in their respective conferences may have them thinking otherwise as the deadline approaches.

With Gerrit Cole and Cam Schlittler at the front of the rotation, the Yankees would seemingly be stacked, but adding a name like Skubal to the mix would give New York, arguably, the best rotation in baseball.

The Braves are another team that will make a deal for the right player and are still leading the NL East, so do not be surprised to see them jump at the opportunity to acquire Skubal if they can put together the right package to get the deal done.

Windy City Interest in Reid Detmers

Yahoo MLB insider Russell Dorsey reported, "Multiple sources tell Yahoo Sports that the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox have each shown interest in Angels left-hander Reid Detmers."

The White Sox are one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season and currently sit fourth in the American League at 55-51. To be a legitimate threat in the postseason, though, they have to bolster their rotation with a strong arm. Detmers fits that mold and is expected to be available as the Angels become sellers at the deadline.

The Cubs are in a similar position because they are one of the most injury-plagued teams in baseball this season. Justin Steele's rehabilitation from his Tommy John surgery has been on the longer side, and the team designated Jameson Taillon, beloved in the locker room, for assignment amid a disastrous 2026.

Adding Detmers to the mix would give the Cubs some much-needed depth in their rotation and allow them to focus on other areas of need as they attempt to contend against the Dodgers and Braves in the National League.

With other teams, such as Milwaukee and Tampa eyeing Skubal and only one of them being able to acquire him, look for other clubs to enter the Detmers competition late in the game.
