Curtis Mead's Injury Timeline Revealed in New Rumors, Red Sox IF Exited 1st Game After Nats Trade

Curtis Mead will miss significant time after just two at-bats with the Boston Red Sox.

Mead suffered a broken left wrist on a hit-by-pitch in the fourth inning of his Red Sox debut Monday night against the Athletics and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive:

He was placed on the injured list on Tuesday.

The Red Sox initially announced Mead had suffered a left wrist contusion. Manager Chad Tracy said after Monday's game initial X-rays were negative, per ESPN.

Mead was acquired Saturday from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed starting pitcher Connelly Early.

The infielder had slashed .254/.352/.500 with 17 home runs and 48 RBI through his first 87 games with the Nationals.

The Red Sox were hoping that he could add some right-handed depth while bringing power to a batting order that has so far this season ranked 29th in total home runs.

The second baseman made his Red Sox debut batting second behind Masataka Yoshida. He struck out in his first at-bat before he was hit by a 94 mile-per-hour pitch from the Athletics' Jack Perkins in his second.

Mead was replaced in the next inning by Anthony Sigler at second base. After the game, Mead said X-rays were negative but that he had "a little bit of pain rotating" his wrist.

Tracy told reporters initial scans indicated the Red Sox had "dodged a bullet" and that Mead was "day to day."

This isn't the first time this season an injury to a Red Sox player has turned out to be more significant than initially expected.

Roman Anthony, who hasn't played since May 4, has experienced multiple setbacks while recovering from what was initially identified as a minor wrist sprain and has since been defined as a partially torn right ring finger tendon.

Garrett Crochet, who last pitched April 25, was initially expected to miss a single start when he was placed on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation but is now uncertain as to whether he will play again this season.

The Red Sox will hope this time to establish a more definitive return timeline for Mead.

For now the club will turn to Triple-A infielder Nick Sogard, who Cassell reported was called up in Mead's place. Sogard has batted .257 with three extra base hits in 12 appearances for the Red Sox so far this season.
