Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy QB Battle Updated by HC Kevin O'Connell at Vikings Training Camp

Now that the Minnesota Vikings have opened training camp, all of the attention is on the quarterback competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed the competition on Tuesday, explaining both quarterbacks will take reps with the first- and second-team offenses as the coaching staff looks for an "elevator" with a mindset "to execute our offense with comfort."

The Vikings signed Murray to a one-year contract in March after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals.

Despite Murray's track record of success throughout most of his NFL career, Minnesota's messaging throughout the offseason has been that McCarthy will get a fair shot to compete for the starting job in 2026.

That insistence from the coaching staff could have some ramifications on Murray's ability to fully run the offense as he learns a new system. He even alluded to not being totally comfortable with the scheme during mandatory minicamp last month due to splitting first-team reps:

"I was [in Arizona] for seven years. I know I had two different offensive systems [there], but at the same time, you're getting all those reps. Now I have these split reps. It's me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps that you would typically want a guy to get learning an offense. That's probably the toughest part."

This could be a situation that drags on for awhile, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has suggested O'Connell may wait until "right up to the start of the regular season" to make a decision.

McCarthy is coming off a difficult 2025 season after missing his entire rookie campaign due to a torn meniscus. The former first-round pick had a 6-4 record in 10 starts, but he threw 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and his 57.6 completion percentage was the second-lowest among all quarterbacks with at least 200 attempts.

Murray was limited to five starts with the Cardinals last season due to a foot injury. He threw for 962 yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions and completed 68.3 percent of his attempts in those games.

The next big date on the calendar for the Vikings is Aug. 15 when they open their preseason schedule against the New York Giants. They will kickoff the regular season on Sept. 13 against the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium.
