Noah Lyles Injured, Gives Update After Losing 200M Race at USA National Championships

Noah Lyles' attempt to win the 200 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday was interrupted when he pulled up coming into the final stretch with an apparent injury.

Speaking to reporters after the race, Lyles explained he "felt a grabbing sensation" around his hamstring and decided there was "no reason to push" it while risking a potentially more significant issue.

Lyles added it felt like a cramp and he will "get stretched out, get some electrolytes in my system, but I'll be good."

Garrett Kaalund would go on to win the men's 200 meters after Lyles pulled up. The USC standout took the top spot with a time of 20.04 seconds. Brandon Hicklin and Maximilian Thomas rounded out the top three.

Sunday marked just the fourth time Lyles has lost a 200-meter race since 2018. Two of his previous three losses were at the Olympic finals in 2020 and 2024.

Despite the abrupt end to his race on Sunday, the weekend wasn't a total loss for Lyles. He won the men's 100 meters two days earlier with a time of 9.79 seconds, tying his personal best time in the event.

Lyles, whose 29th birthday was on July 18, will be competing in the world championships next year and is eyeing an appearance in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Florida native has already said he will retire before the 2032 Games, making the LA Olympics his final attempt to add more medals to his collection. He has three Olympic medals, including a gold in the 100 meters from Paris in 2024.
