Verstappen's runner-up showing matches his best performance of the season, and he's on the podium for the third time in his last four races. The four-time F1 champion surprised himself with the result given the general state of his car:

Kimi Antonelli, who's leading the standings for the drivers' championship, didn't come away empty-handed as he crossed the line in third place.

Lewis Hamilton incurred a costly five-second penalty for speeding in pit lane with just a few laps remaining, and that knocked him back to fifth.

For the second straight week, George Russell lost valuable ground in the battle for the drivers' championship.

Russell had harsh words for his Mercedes team after going out of the Belgian Grand Prix on the opening lap. His assessment from Sunday is unlikely to be any better.

By starting in sixth, Russell was already at a disadvantage before the race got underway. He tumbled further down the leaderboard when his car's anti-stall technology was triggered at the start.

Slowly but surely, the 28-year-old found his bearings again and briefly had the fastest car on the track. He couldn't fully climb out of his early hole, though, and finished in seventh place.

Oscar Piastri went into Sunday also aiming to close the sizable gap between himself and Antonelli. They were separated by 112 points.

By earning the third spot in the starting grid, Piastri had a golden opportunity to get onto the podium and give his title quest a boost. He was running near the top of the field on Lap 56 when disaster struck.

A gearbox problem forced Piastri to pull off to the side, bringing an end to his day and resulting in a 20th-place showing.

The Formula One season will pause for around a month as drivers reset at the halfway mark. The Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort is slated for Aug. 23.

For the likes of Piastri, Russell and Verstappen, the break will be a time to address what has gone wrong and figure out some solutions. They need to start stringing positive results together in order to chase down Antonelli.
