New MLB Rumors on Athletics Star Shea Langeliers' Injury as Surgery Decision Looms After Trade Buzz

Athletics All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers reportedly suffered a torn meniscus that could end his 2026 season, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

If Langeliers opts to have surgery to repair the injury his campaign would be over.

Langeliers, 28, was in the midst of another fantastic season, earning his first All-Star bid while hitting .263 with 23 homers, 51 RBI, 55 runs and an .829 OPS. He's now hit 22 or more homers in four straight seasons and was well on his way to a second straight season with over 30 dingers before this injury.

Add in his defensive capabilities—he's gunned down 11 runners on 35 stolen-base attempts—and he's become one of the top catchers in the sport. That makes his injury a huge blow to the organization.

The Athletics were well out of the postseason picture anyway, given their 44-60 record. But Langeliers' injury could impact the team in other ways.

As Passan noted, "Regardless of his [surgery] decision, the injury is almost certain to end any trade talks around Langeliers, regarded as among the best catchers in baseball. While the A's did not plan to move him, multiple teams hoped their stance would soften before the Aug. 3 deadline, sources said."

If the A's were going to consider loading up on young prospects for Langeliers, that ship has now sailed. It's just been that sort of season for the Athletics.
