Will Grier Joins Cowboys Coaching Staff Under Brian Schottenheimer After NFL Retirement

Former NFL quarterback Will Grier is returning to the Dallas Cowboys as a member of the coaching staff.

Grier is joining Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer's staff as an offensive assistant, ESPN's Todd Archer reported Friday.

The 31-year-old previously spent two separate stints with the Cowboys as a reserve or backup quarterback.

Grier most recently signed with the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason before announcing his retirement earlier this month.

He will begin working with the Cowboys coaching staff when training camp starts July 29 in Oxnard, California, per DallasCowboys.com's Nick Eatman.

Grier's first preseason as a Cowboys coach will feature scrimmages with the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints in addition to games against the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Saints.

Grier starred at West Virginia before the Panthers selected him in the third round of the 2019 draft.

He saw his lone regular-season NFL action in 2019, when he appeared in two games for the Panthers during his rookie season.

Grier spent the rest of his NFL career working as a practice squad, third-string or backup quarterback with the Panthers and Cowboys in addition to the Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles.

He spent time in the Cowboys organization between 2021 and 2023, then rejoined the team in 2024. Grier appeared in a total of eight preseason games for the Cowboys over that span.

The quarterback signed a future/reserves contract with the team in February before he was released in March.

Grier's father told The Athletic's Joseph Person his son considered taking a job on the Cowboys' coaching staff before deciding to sign with the Panthers instead.

He will now return to a Cowboys offense that ranked second in the NFL in total yardage last season. Grier will now look to help Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Javonte Williams build on that success during his first season as an NFL coach.
