Mets' Luis Robert Jr. Placed on Waivers in New MLB Rumors, Latest Contract Details

The New York Mets placed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. on outright waivers, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

Any team that claims him would be on the hook for the $3 million remaining on Robert's contract for this season. Robert's deal also includes a $20 million team option for 2027 or a $2 million buyout. In total, there is approximately $5 million guaranteed to Robert.

Robert is not the first notable player to be placed on outright waivers this week. Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Reds placed slugger Eugenio Suarez and outfielder T.J. Friedl on waivers. Neither player was claimed, and they each remained with the club.

This doesn't come as much of a surprise considering where the Mets stand this season. New York (60-75) is currently 20 games back in the National League East and 12 games out in the wild card race.

With the Mets out of the race, putting Robert on waivers gives the team a chance to get some money off the payroll if anyone is willing to take a chance on him.

The 29-year-old Robert has appeared in just 56 games in another injury-plagued season, recording a .229/.310/.410 slash line with 10 home runs and 23 RBI. He started the season healthy but landed on the 60-day injured list in April because of a lumbar disc herniation, forcing him to miss a good chunk of the season. He returned to the lineup on July 20.

Robert started his career with the Chicago White Sox, where he earned an All-Star nod, a Gold Glove Award and a Silver Slugger Award. He's been unable to repeat that success in recent years amid a handful of injuries, and now, he'll see if any team is willing to give him a look for the rest of the season.
