DeVonta Smith's 'Extra Opportunities' in Eagles' Offense Hyped by Sirianni After A.J. Brown Trade

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni feels wide receiver DeVonta Smith could take on a larger role in his team's offense now that A.J. Brown has been traded to the New England Patriots.

"I'm excited for the extra opportunities that DeVonta is going to get his way," Sirianni said earlier this offseason, per NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro.

"And I know every time that we've given him extra opportunities, he's always taking advantage of those. And so now he's going to get more of those."

Smith is heading into his sixth campaign with the Eagles as the team's projected WR1 after largely splitting targets last season with Brown.

He finished the season having recorded 77 catches on 113 targets for 1,008 receiving yards with four touchdowns.

Brown, who received a team-high 78 targets in 15 games, completed his final campaign in Philadelphia having made 78 catches for 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Sirianni spoke about what Brown's trade to the Patriots could mean for Smith in his first public media appearance since the trade back in early June.

"Really excited about that room that we have," Sirianni said about his wide receivers on June 9. "DeVonta Smith has had a really good offseason, has had, what, five good years of being an Eagle as well. Very, very productive, and excited that he's going to get extra opportunities that he worked [for]."

Losing Brown isn't the only change the Eagles are adjusting to this offseason. The team is also taking on an updated offensive scheme under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.

Mannion's offense is expected to look like a Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay-style scheme "featuring lots of under center and pre-snap motion," ESPN's Tim McManus reported in June.

The Eagles will hope the combination of Mannion's new scheme and Smith's first season as an undisputed top wide receiver will help the offense bounce back after ranking 24th in the NFL in total yards last season.

The Eagles will get their first full look at a wide receiver depth chart featuring Smith in front of 2026 first-round pick Makai Lemon and offseason trade acquisition Dontayvion Wicks when players report for training camp next Tuesday, July 28.
