Red Sox's Willson Contreras Reflects on Team's Historic 15-Game Winning Streak, 'A Great Ride'

Wednesday night saw the Boston Red Sox suffer their first defeat since July 1 when they lost 5-1 to the Baltimore Orioles, snapping their franchise-record 15-game winning streak.

Reflecting on the streak afterward, first baseman Willson Contreras told reporters it was a "great ride" to be part of a legendary stretch for a team that has existed since 1901.

"That was a great ride, a 15-game winning streak. There's nothing to be sad about," Contreras said. "We have to be happy. We should be proud of what we did and from now keep playing the way we've been playing."

Boston extended the streak to 15 earlier in the day with a 6-3 win in the first leg of a doubleheader. The one run scored in the night cap was the fewest in a game for the Red Sox since June 30.

Baltimore was just the third team since the streak began to score at least five runs against the Red Sox, joining the Los Angeles Angels on July 5 and Tampa Bay Rays on July 18.

The streak saved a season that had been a disaster for three months. It started with Alex Cora being fired as manager on April 25 after a 10-17 start.

After losing a series to the Colorado Rockies, the Red Sox had the worst record in the AL at 32-46. Their .410 winning percentage at that point was on pace to be their worst in a 162-game season since 1965 when they finished 62-100.

The 15-game winning streak started on July 3 when the Red Sox were 11 games under .500 and 6.5 games out of the playoffs. They are now three games over .500 and hold a two game lead for the final wild card spot.

Boston's winning streak was the longest by any MLB team since the St. Louis Cardinals won 17 straight in 2021.

The Red Sox have an off day Thursday to catch their breath before trying to start a new streak on Friday night when they begin a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
