Liberty center Jonquel Jones later hit a go-ahead free throw with three seconds left in the game, sealing the win.
Ionescu finished with 29 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
Fans were amazed by her night.
Ionescu discussed her mindset during the late comeback.
"Understood what the score was and we knew we had to get threes up, so obviously my teammates set good screens… I just saw the basket, I felt like I was kind of having my three-point shootout in game," Ionescu said after the win, per Madeline Kenney of the New York Post.
The four-time All-Star has won the WNBA's 3-Point Contest in two of the past three years, but previously fired back at reports she declined to participate in the 2026 competition.
"I can't decline an offer I never got officially invited to," Ionescu told reporters before Wednesday's game. "So was pretty surprised to see that. Never got invited... Whether it's against Steph Curry or in the W, I always go out and try and beat my record every single time I've gone out. So yeah, I mean I just kind of wanted to set the record straight. Like that was that was just false."
Ionescu's efforts against the Sky were particularly impressive considering New York's other four starters weren't as efficient offensively, combining to shoot just 17-of-46 from the field.
The Liberty improved to 15-12 with the win as they attempt to make a sixth consecutive playoff appearance.
