Red Sox's Historic Win Streak Snapped After Tying Franchise Record, Latest Box Scores and Highlights

The Boston Red Sox's win streak reached a historic mark on Wednesday, but they couldn't set a new record.

The Red Sox won their 15th straight game, beating the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. The win tied Boston's franchise record for consecutive wins, a mark that was set in 1946.

The Red Sox lost the second game of the night, however, bringing the win streak to an end.

The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead in the first game, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when Caleb Durbin hit an RBI single. Jarren Duran then drove in two more in the first with a triple.

The Orioles cut into the lead with a run in the third, but Boston answered right back when Duran hit a sac fly that scored Durbin. After Baltimore homered in the fourth, Ceddanne Rafaela drilled one to left-center to make it a 6-2 game.

The Orioles scored again in the sixth inning, but they didn't have enough to mount the comeback.

Starting pitcher Jake Bennett went 5.2 innings on the mound, giving up three runs but getting four strikeouts to earn the win. Aroldis Chapman came on in the top of the ninth to earn the save.

Unfortunately for Boston, it couldn't carry its momentum into the second game.

Eduardo Rivera had a rough start when he gave up four first-inning runs. The Red Sox got on the board in the fourth when Masataka Yoshida's single drove in a run, but that was all Boston's offense could muster.

Baltimore tacked on an insurance run in the seventh for good measure.

Brayan Bello gave the Red Sox a solid outing after Rivera's first-inning collapse, though it didn't matter since Boston's offense couldn't get going.

The win streak for the Sox dated back to July 3 when they faced the Los Angeles Angels. They swept the Angels and did the same to the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays. A win on Wednesday night would've given Boston five consecutive sweeps.

The Red Sox were 37-48 before the streak and appeared on their way to missing the postseason, but they've completely turned the season around. After Wednesday's action, they're sitting at 52-49 on the year and are in third place in the AL East and in wild-card position.

According to FanGraphs, Boston has a 63.4 percent chance to make the playoffs.

When the Red Sox started the season 10-17 and fired manager Alex Cora, it was hard to imagine they'd be a postseason team. Now, Boston is surging into the second half of the season and very well could be a team to watch this fall.

The win streak may be over, but the Red Sox should feel good about themselves moving forward.
