MLB Exec Predicts 'Big Surprise' from Rays at 2026 MLB Trade Deadline amid Rumors

One MLB executive believes a "big surprise" before the Aug. 3 trade deadline will be the Tampa Bay Rays acting as serious buyers.

"I think the big surprise will be Tampa buying big," that rival executive said, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. "They're everywhere scouting."

"Another official listed the Rays, Phillies, New York Yankees and San Diego Padres as the teams with the most prominent scouting presence in major-league parks," Rosenthal and Sammon added. "That measure, though, is not as meaningful as it once was. Some teams prefer to rely on data and video more than scouts in the field."

On Wednesday morning, both ESPN's Jeff Passan and Buster Olney listed the Rays as a team that would be "adding aggressively" this summer.

The 58-42 Rays have the American League's best record, and they have a 96.8 percent chance to make the postseason, per Baseball-Reference. However, they need to keep their foot on the gas.

They sit two games ahead of the New York Yankees for the AL East lead, and the third-place Boston Red Sox, who are 6.5 games behind, have won 14 straight matchups.

Tampa Bay usually sits near the bottom of the league in payroll, and that's the case again this year ($102.4 million, which ranks the Rays 23rd overall, per Spotrac).

However, if reports are true, then it's clear Tampa Bay understands the position it's in and wants to go for it.

The American League is there for the taking with no true powerhouses this year, and the Rays can certainly grab the pennant for the first time in franchise history since 2008.
