Maya World Beats Hikaru Shida to Win AEW TBS Title at 2026 Redemption After Run in Owen Hart Cup

Maya World's breakout summer continues after winning her first singles title in AEW by defeating Hikaru Shida for the TBS championship at Redemption.

World pulled off the upset win when she pinned Shida with the bridging SOS.

Shida cost herself a win when it looked like World was on the verge of tapping out with her bow-and-arrow submission, but she stopped the challenger from hitting the mat.

World responded with a slam to win her first title as an AEW star.

Celebrating her 24th birthday on Sunday, World's singles run came about almost by accident after she was a replacement in the Owen Hart Cup tournament when Sareee wasn't medically cleared.

World made a surprise run to the final by defeating Skye Blue and Athena before falling to Mercedes Moné at Forbidden Door, but her performance in that match significantly elevated her profile.

AEW set up World for her first pay-per-view title match on the July 18 episode of Collision when she saved Queen Aminata from a post-match attack by Shida, who just successfully defended the TBS title against Aminata.

Shida won the TBS title in a six-woman Survival of the Fittest Match on the July 1 episode of Dynamite after Willow Nightingale had to vacate the crown due to an injury.

Since returning to AEW in April, Shida has embraced a new heel persona that culminated when she turned on Kris Statlander at Double or Nothing. Her victory in the Survival of the Fittest Match marked her first title win since holding the AEW women's championship in 2023.

Shida entered Redemption on a four-match winning streak, including successful title defenses over Aminata and Harley Cameron.

The win for World suggests she will continue to be elevated into a major player in AEW's women's division. It also sets up the possibility that she will be champion in a high-profile match going into All In at Wembley Stadium on Aug. 30.
