New Sam LaPorta Injury Update Reveals Status, Return Timeline Ahead of Lions Training Camp

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta was fully cleared for training camp earlier in July, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

LaPorta is expected to be a full participant in Detroit's training camp, per Tim Twentyman of the team's official website (h/t Fowler).

The 25-year-old was limited to just nine games during the 2025 season after undergoing a a microdiscectomy to repair a fully herniated disk.

LaPorta appeared to be making progress in his recovery prior to Fowler's update, as he previously participated in OTAs.

The former Iowa standout immediately operated as a key contributor in the Lions' passing attack as a rookie, catching 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023.

LaPorta followed it up with a productive 2024 campaign, racking up 726 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 12.1 yards per reception.

He remained impactful prior to his injury last season, hauling in 40 receptions for 489 yards and three scores through nine appearances.

With LaPorta back in the mix, the Lions are looking to return to the NFC playoff picture after narrowly missing the postseason with a 9-8 record in 2025.
