Young was the clubhouse leader for quite some time. He shot six-under for the round to reach nine-under. Ultimately, his effort was only good enough to claim second place.

Fox will take home a $3.2 million winners' purse. Young takes home $1.8 million, while third-place finisher Sam Burns earned $1.18 million.

Fox's win also came with 750 points in the FedEx Cup standings. He is now up to 21st in those rankings with the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the horizon in August.

The top three finishers at Royal Birkdale are now inside the top 25 of the FedEx Cup standings.

Fox, who finished in the top 40 at the last two majors, earned the 750 points that are awarded to winners of major tournaments.

The New Zealander caught fire on the back nine with a run of four birdies in six holes to claim the Claret Jug.

Fox had a bogey on the 15th hole during that stretch, but he immediately rebounded with a birdie on the 16th hole.

That set the stage for Fox to either force a playoff, or win the tournament outright on the final two holes.

Fox struck a tremendous approach shot on the 18th hole to set up an 11-foot birdie putt that he sunk with ease.

Fox finished one shot ahead of Cameron Young, who used the lowest round on Sunday to move into second.

Sam Burns, who has come close at a few different majors now, claimed solo third place at eight-under. He shot a two-over 72 to drop from his perch as the 54-hole leader.

Young's second-place finish earned him 500 FedEx Cup points. He is now the third player with over 3,000 FedEx Cup points.

Burns edged up from 10th to eighth in the FedEx Cup standings with the 350 points he earned from third place.

Scottie Scheffler, who finished in a tie for fourth with Tommy Fleetwood, is still the leader in FedEx Cup points.
