"His knee's f--ked up," UFC president Dana White told reporters following Saturday's UFC Fight Night event.

"The Conor McGregor discussion isn't even worth talking about," White added, per ESPN.com. "He's got to have knee surgery, he's going to have to go through physical therapy, it's all going to take time, and then when the doctor says you can start hardcore training again, then we start talking about Conor McGregor again."

Many fans immediately assumed the worst when watching the UFC 329 main event unfold.

McGregor attempted a flying kick from the opening bell and landed awkwardly. He appeared to have limited stability on his right knee, and the referee eventually called for the bell.

The former featherweight and lightweight champion posted on social media he was physically ready to compete in his comeback fight and didn't carry an injury into the contest:

McGregor followed up this week to say he was set to undergo surgery and has plans to fight at least one more time for the UFC.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, White didn't rule that idea out but was candid about how long and arduous McGregor's recovery will be.

"McGregor has to have knee surgery. Then he's gonna have to go through physical therapy and a doctor's gonna have to give him a sign-off on when he can start training hard again," White said. "He's got a lot of things to figure out in his head, in his life, before he starts thinking about boxing or UFC again. It's gonna be a long comeback for him if he decides that's what he wants to do. He's got a lot of soul-searching [to do], find that fire that he used to have, and we'll see how that plays out."

White and the UFC will have their own factors to consider. McGregor has lost four of his last five fights, and injuries abruptly ended his two most recent outings.

The 38-year-old remains a massive star, but the UFC has to feel confident he can deliver in the Octagon if he's booked to fight. It's too early to know when or even if he'll get back to that point physically.
