Josh Kerr Breaks Men's Mile World Record in Trending Video from London Diamond League

British runner Josh Kerr made history on Saturday by breaking the men's mile record, which had stood for 27 years.

Competing at a Diamond League meet in London, Kerr completed the mile in 3 minutes and 42.66 seconds, which broke the previous record of 3:43.13 set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999, per Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports:

According to Zaccardi, Kerr joins Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram and Roger Bannister as Brits who have held the men's mile record at one time or another.

Kerr entered Friday's race with the goal of setting a new record, telling reporters, "It's in my favor, for sure. My body is capable of the mark, and so my job tomorrow is to have my mind to be available to let my body do its job. ... It's time for that record to have a real go at it, and I'm going to be that guy to do it."

The 28-year-old Kerr is a two-time Olympian who specializes in the 1,500-meter event, which is just a bit shorter than the mile at 1,609 meters.

Kerr won bronze in the 1500m at the 2020 Summer Olympics and silver in the same event at the 2024 Summer Olympics, plus he won gold in the 1500m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

Being the new mile record holder rivals all of those major accomplishments and further cements Kerr as one of the top middle-distance runners in the world.
