Liberty vs. Paige Bueckers, Wings Postponed Due to Travel Issues, WNBA Announces Rescheduled Date
The WNBA announced Thursday's game between the Dallas Wings and New York Liberty has been postponed due to travel issues for the Liberty.
New York's charter plane experienced mechanical issues, delaying its planned arrival in Dallas.
The Wings and Liberty will instead play on July 20 at 8 p.m. ET.
Thursday's postponement is somewhat ironic given the changes to the WNBA's travel policy were intended to avoid situations just like this.
Prior to May 2024, teams almost exclusively flew commercial.
In the best of circumstances, a lot of players were left in cramped quarters as they flew between cities. And seemingly at least once every season, a team was subjected to a travel nightmare.
The Las Vegas Aces forfeited a game in 2018 because they didn't arrive at the arena until hours before tip-off. Midway through the 2022 season, Los Angeles Sparks star Nneka Ogwumike said she and some of her teammates were reduced to sleeping at the airport because they couldn't secure hotel accommodations after rebooking a flight:
With the WNBA investing in full-time chartered flights, this has at least been less of an issue.
Rescheduling the Liberty game for next Monday means the Wings will be playing a back-to-back, but they get both games in Dallas. New York will now have just one day off following Saturday's matchup with the Indiana Fever.
