Mets Trade Luke Weaver to Pirates, Latest MLB Rumors on Full Deal Ahead of Deadline

The New York Mets traded relief pitcher Luke Weaver to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, according to ESPN's Jorge Castillo.

New York will receive shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura in return, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The right-hander's change of scenery isn't a major shock, as Will Sammon of The Athletic previously reported that Weaver was expected to be pursued aggressively ahead of the trade deadline.

He has one season remaining on a two-year, $22 million contract that he signed with the Mets in Dec. 2025.

Adding Weaver should help boost a Pirates bullpen that has struggled mightily this season. After losing three of four to the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend, Pittsburgh sits at 56-57, which puts it 3.5 games back in the wild card race.

While New York currently sits in last place in the National League East at 47-66, Weaver has been a bright spot in the team's bullpen.

The 32-year-old owns a 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA in 42 games, striking out 45 batters in 44 innings.

Weaver's recent track record should also be an encouraging sign for Pittsburgh moving forward, as he previously wrapped up a successful stint on the New York Yankees from 2023-25.

He operated in several roles with the Yankees and spent time as their closer. In 129 total appearances as a member of the club, Weaver recorded 12 saves to go along with a 3.22 ERA and 0.994 WHIP.

Now, he's joining a Pirates squad looking to end its 2026 campaign on a high note.
