CM Punk Addresses Fan Backlash to WWE Title Win, New Diet, Pipe Bomb and UFC Criticism in New Video

Doric SamJul 13, 2026

Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk is aware that some fans aren't happy with his recent title win against Sami Zayn, but he's still unbothered.

Punk sat down for a wide-ranging interview on What's Your Story? With Steph McMahon, and he addressed the assertion from fans that he "stole" the undisputed title with a simple response.

"Oh, I won the title, clean," Punk said (h/t WrestleTalk). "I beat that 41-year-old youngster fair and square in the middle of the ring."

Punk was Zayn's surprise opponent for his title defense on last week's episode of Monday Night Raw, and he won the belt in front of his home fans in Chicago to end Zayn's reign after less than two weeks. It was Punk's first match since he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42 in April.

Punk said that he made a commitment to revamp his physique before WrestleMania, and he stuck to a strict diet ahead of his return.

"I eat meals that have like maybe three ingredients: white rice, 99 blend lean ground venison and salt," he said.

Punk also spoke about his legendary Pipe Bomb promo during his first run in WWE in 2011, saying that he considered taking a break from wrestling before what turned out to be one of the biggest moments of his career.

Punk also revealed that Vince McMahon knew the details of what he would say before he went out for his infamous rant, though he had a small note.

"It was both. It was approved and it wasn't. It was approved to a degree," Punk said (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News). "He read it, and his only feedback was, 'All right, it's good. Just make fun of Stephanie.' I was like, 'Excuse me?' He said, 'Yeah, add her in there.'"

Punk added that he let the crowd reaction dictate his delivery of the promo, and he revealed Vince McMahon's response when it was all said and done.

"The instincts took over. I felt super strongly that this was the way it had to be, so I went out and did it that way," he said. "When I came back, 'I smell money' is what he said. At the time, that was the stamp of approval. That was it."

Punk's promo was so memorable that WWE ranked it No. 1 on its list of the Top 100 Raw moments after he stepped away from the wrestling business. The 47-year-old admitted he was surprised when he found out that the Pipe Bomb was immortalized.

"I remember being like, I am flabbergasted at that," Punk said (h/t Rosanne Raphael of Wrestling Observer). "To be so good, to make that moment what it was, to have him sign off on that and to make that the number one Raw moment, to me, it speaks volumes. That's insane!"

Punk also discussed his brief dalliance with the UFC, saying that he was aware of the "criticism" he'd face when he started his MMA career, but, "I don't like saying no to things that scare the s--t out of me."

Punk is set to defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes at during the two-night SummerSlam premium live event on Aug. 1 and 2.
