Conor McGregor Talks Goal Of Becoming UFC's 1st Triple Champ After Return Fight vs. Max Holloway

Mike ChiariJul 9, 2026

Amid preparations to return from a five-year hiatus from in-ring competition, Conor McGregor divulged Thursday that he has becoming a champion in three different weight classes on his mind.

When asked about that possibility in an interview with TMZ Sports, McGregor responded by saying, "Yeah, for sure it's an aspiration. For sure it's a goal. The original double champion, the original champ-champ, attesting the triple crown and winning is glory."

The 37-year-old McGregor is perhaps best known for becoming the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles in two different weight classes simultaneously.

McGregor accomplished the feat a decade ago when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title while he was already the reigning UFC featherweight champion.

On Saturday, McGregor will face Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329, marking his first fight since losing to Dustin Poirier by doctor stoppage at UFC 264 in July 2021.

Should McGregor defeat Holloway, it is possible he could soon find himself in the hunt for a UFC welterweight title opportunity, which is a championship currently held by the 28-1 Islam Makhachev.

Getting to that point is easier said than done, though, given McGregor's long layoff and his lack of success prior to taking five years off.

McGregor lost three of his past four fights and four of his past seven, including back-to-back defeats against Poirier in 2021.

Despite that, McGregor expressed a belief that he has what it takes to return to the top of UFC, telling TMZ Sports, "I am confident in my ability to reach that peak."

The first step toward becoming the first three-division world champion in UFC history starts Saturday when McGregor clashes with Holloway.
