Saints' First Regular Season Win Q&A

Ken OtkenSep 14, 2009

The Saints marched out of the dome Sunday with a convincing scoreboard win over the hapless Lions, but how "play convincing" was it?  There were high notes and low notes and this write up will attempt to answer some of the questions I've seen posted about the game, and likely will create a few new ones.

One of the bigger question marks about Sundays performance was "What happened to Reggie Bush?"  The answer is either simple or complicated depending on what type of fan you are.  What most fans need to understand is that Reggie was playing off last year's injury and hadn't gotten many reps in training camp or pre-season play.  There's a LOT of rust to get knocked off of his personal game play, something that I'm pretty sure a weeks worth of practice will help accomplish. (Mike Bell's stunning 143 yard display will surely help this happen also.)

Second question, "Special Teams or Special Ed??"  Regarding the seemingly complete mental breakdown of the special teams, all I can say about it is "Practice, Practice, Practice"  and then practice a WHOLE lot more.  The miscues on both sides of the ball were hard to watch. You hoped the first was a fluke, then the second, then after the third you just hoped the Saints would survive their own mistakes.

Third, "I thought Gregg Williams was going to go out and demolish the "fresh meat" rookie QB with blitzes all day long!"  In the NFL,  the more secrets you keep the deeper into the season, the better your chances of winning 'deep into the season'.  I'm sure if Williams had thought massive blitz packages were necessary,  he would've called them. Playing the Lions with a rookie though, I'd rather he kept as many of his looks in the playbook as he could. The Eagles are next on the menu and I feel sure that all of the Saints faithful will see plenty of what they've been itching for.  Reggie Bush clearing out the secondary on a screen or a punt return, all out blitzes that have the Eagles QB looking like a doe in the headlights, and special teams play that has Fleur De Lis crowding the ball carrier at every step.

Have faith Saints fans, the fun has just begun!
