Mac Jones Reveals Bill Belichick Considered Being Patriots OC in 2022 After Josh McDaniels' Exit

Bill Belichick reportedly considered taking on full-time offensive play-calling duties late in his 24-season tenure with the New England Patriots.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones talked about turnover in the Patriots' offensive leadership group when former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left ahead of the 2022 season on Wednesday's episode of the Bussin' With The Boys podcast.

McDaniels' departure left Belichick, offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach Joe Judge and senior football advisor Matt Patricia leading the Patriots' offense.

"At first, Bill was going to call the plays," Jones said around the 9:15 mark of the podcast. "Which I was like, 'Alright, this is kind of fun. Let's see how this goes.'

"He took it over, and we kind of didn't know where we going. There was three people in the meeting, who stands up to talk to the offense? They didn't really know."

Jones said Belichick called occasional plays during the 2022 preseason before the Patriots announced Patricia and Judge would split playcalling duties in August.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer previously reported after the 2022 season that Belichick had oversight over his offense and was "active on the headsets on game day."

Belichick and the Patriots ultimately parted ways after the 2023 season before the eight-time Super Bowl winner took over at UNC last year.

After bringing in new staff members this offseason including offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, Belichick and the Tar Heels are now looking to bounce back from a 4-8 finish to the 2025 campaign.
