For the past several years, the Braves system has skewed heavily toward pitching, but that narrative is shifting after they selected infielders Tate Southisene and Alex Lodise at the top of last year's draft haul, and with the emergence of Eric Hartman.

Let's unpack how all the Day 1 action unfolded for the Braves, and how it changes the look of their system.

The Braves kicked off their draft by taking one of the most polished bats in the entire class. AJ Gracia transferred from Duke to Virginia during the offseason, then hit .354/.489/.632 with 14 home runs, and there could be more power to come in pro ball.

His limited defensive profile might have been a knock if he were drafted elsewhere, as he will likely be limited to left field, but that's where he fits on the Braves, regardless. Don't be surprised if he's one of the first players from this draft to reach the majors.

The selection of Carter Beck with their second pick was off-board relative to pre-draft rankings, as most had him well outside the top 75 prospects, but he's a well-rounded outfield prospect who could exceed expectations. He also looks like a candidate for a below-slot bonus, which should help them sign prep right-handers Kaiden McCarthy and Jensen Hirschkorn, who will likely both require an above-slot deal.

Crown Jewel: The Braves gave Eric Hartman a $340,000 bonus as a 20th-round pick in 2024, and that is shaping up to be one of the biggest steals in recent draft history. The Canadian-born outfielder is hitting .285/.360/.547 with 16 doubles, 20 home runs, 50 RBI and 31 steals in 75 games at High-A, and flying up top prospect lists in the process.

System Weakness: Aside from Drake Baldwin, the Braves farm system has been lacking in impact position player talent in recent years. The flip side is that they continue to be among the best in the business at developing pitching, but finding a starting shortstop and some outfield help in-house could go a long way.

Second-Half Outlook: JR Ritchie is already in the majors, and Owen Murphy made his MLB debut on July 6, but beyond those two pitchers, most of Atlanta's top prospects are still years away. Further down the prospect list, Blake Burkhalter and Drue Hackenberg are on track to debut in 2026.
