Pat Surtain II, Stingley Jr., Gonzalez Lead Top 10 NFL CB Rankings by Coaches, Execs in New Poll

Denver Broncos star Patrick Surtain II remains the gold standard for cornerbacks entering the 2026 NFL season.

Surtain was voted the top cornerback in the NFL in a survey of coaches, executives and scouts conducted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Derek Stingley Jr. of the Houston Texans and Christian Gonzalez of the New England Patriots round out the top three.

Even though Surtain didn't put up the same gaudy stats in 2025 as he did in 2024 when he was named Defensive Player of the Year, the Broncos star remains the best shutdown cornerback in the NFL.

Surtain's 0.7 yards allowed per coverage snap was the best in the league last season.

"If you went in a lab and made the ideal cornerback, it'd be Patrick Surtain," one NFC personnel evaluator told Fowler.

Fowler noted Surtain received more than 75 percent of the first-place votes from those who responded. He finished in the top five on every ballot cast.

Stingley is No. 2 on the list for the second straight year after making the All-Pro first team in back-to-back seasons.

"Elite feet and back-to-the-ball instincts," a veteran NFC coach said of Stingley. "If you throw a 50-50 ball, he's probably going to come up with it. And the quarterback will choose to throw some of those because the pass rush is so good."

The Texans star has recorded at least four interceptions in three straight seasons. His 14 total interceptions during that span ranks second in the NFL, behind Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph.

It speaks to how cornerback play is evaluated and how much talent there is at the position right now that voting reflects a wide variety of opinions in the rankings.

Surtain and Stingley were the only players who received first-place votes, but seven of the remaining eight players in the top 10 received at least one vote as high as No. 3.

Denzel Ward got one second-place vote, with one personnel evaluator telling Fowler his contributions get underrated because he plays for a Cleveland Browns team that has largely been irrelevant in the AFC for most of his career.

"If Ward played in Kansas City or New England, he'd be the talk of the NFL," the evaluator said. "He doesn't get the credit he should. Twitch or closing speed, there's no one better. He closes faster than anyone I've ever seen. In coverage, that is a special trait."

One player whose stock is trending in the wrong direction is Sauce Gardner. He dropped four spots in one year, going from No. 4 in 2025 to ninth place entering the 2026 season.

An offensive coach told Fowler that Gardner suffers from being a player who is "not going to tackle all the time" and is at times "not playing it correctly" when in zone coverage.

Gardner's stock could also be impacted by injuries that limited him to 11 games last season between the Colts and New York Jets. It marked the second consecutive year he has missed at least two games. He also hasn't had an interception since Week 15 of the 2024 season.

Surtain, Stingley, Gonzalez and Witherspoon were the only four players ranked in the top 10 by everyone who responded.
