Leclerc Beats Russell & Hamilton for 1st British F1 GP Win, Full Results, Standings & Highlights
Charles Leclerc claimed the checkered flag in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit, notching his first win of the 2026 Formula One season.
Lewis Hamilton was unable to prevail on home soil but got onto the podium with a third-place finish. It's the first time for Leclerc and Hamilton together as teammates.
The Ferrari team may nonetheless be a little disappointed with its overall showing as Hamilton had been running in second before he made a late pit stop. That allowed for George Russell to overtake him.
The three points lost for Hamilton were important because F1 leader Kimi Antonelli had a disastrous final stretch of the race, culminating in a 16th-place showing.
Antonelli started from the pole and was hovering near the top of the field for much of the day. Car trouble forced him into the pits on Lap 42, though, and he lost costly spots on the leaderboard. Compounding matters, he received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.
Antonelli entered the British Grand Prix with a lead of 40-plus points on George Russell and Hamilton, who are shaping up to be the only other serious contenders for the yearlong title. With his mechanical misfortune, he sacrificed some valuable ground.
The increasingly slim hopes of Max Verstappen becoming a five-time champion took a serious hit as well.
Verstappen spun out onto the gravel on the 48th lap, ending his race early. The broadcast captured him venting his frustration with the state of his car, capping off an aggravating weekend.
Mad Max wound up all the way down in 20th.
Verstappen struggled out of the gate in 2025 before catching fire in the second half and nearly chasing down Lando Norris. A similar comeback doesn't appear to be on the cards, however, given the overall state of the Red Bull setup.
The Belgian Grand Prix is on tap next on July 19 as the schedule nears the halfway point. Oscar Piastri is the defending champion after holding off Norris in last year's event.
