Roman Reigns Beats Seth Rollins to Retain WWE World Title in Shield Rivalry Match at SummerSlam 2026

Roman Reigns beat Seth Rollins on Night 2 of WWE SummerSlam 2026 on Sunday to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

After a grueling, hard-fought encounter, Reigns delivered a final spear to lay out Rollins for the win.

However, the victory also saw both men close the book on their time together in The Shield and allowed Reigns to exorcise the ghost of Rollins' 2014 betrayal of him and Dean Ambrose.

After the match, Reigns held out his arm to Rollins, who met him in the center of the ring for a respectful, final fist bump—an image made famous during their time together in The Shield.

The history between Reigns and Rollins is well documented and dates all the way back to their origins on the WWE main roster as two-thirds of the group.

Along with Dean Ambrose, Reigns and Rollins ran roughshod over WWE as a unit, and once The Shield disbanded, all of them went on to become world champions and top stars individually.

While Reigns has had the greatest success among them, victories over Rollins have been hard for him to come by.

In fact, The Tribal Chief had never beaten Rollins in a non-tag-team match at a premium live event entering their clash at SummerSlam.

Some of Rollins' most notable wins over Reigns included a successful Money in the Bank contract cash-in during Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31, a WWE Championship win at Money in the Bank 2016, a disqualification victory at Royal Rumble 2022, and a triumph against both Reigns and CM Punk in the Triple Threat main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania 41.

Coming out of Night of Champions, which saw Rollins end his rivalry with Bron Breakker by beating him in a steel cage match, The Visionary interrupted a promo by Reigns.

Citing their history and his many wins against Reigns, Rollins called for him to put the world heavyweight title on the line against him at SummerSlam.

Rollins also pointed out the fact that he never actually lost the World Heavyweight Championship. He had to vacate it due to injury in October 2025, and he hadn't yet had an opportunity to win it back after returning.

After hearing Rollins out, Reigns agreed to the match, and he declared that he needed to beat The Visionary in a high-stakes bout in front of his family.

Reigns did exactly that at SummerSlam, resulting in him finally overcoming one of the biggest knocks against him over the course of his illustrious career.
