Brendan Sorsby's 2027 NFL Draft Status Revealed, QB Issues Statement After Settlement

Scott PolacekJun 30, 2026

Brendan Sorsby released a statement Tuesday revealing he will focus on his recovery and preparation for the 2027 NFL draft instead of pursuing further legal action after the league decided against having a 2026 supplemental draft.

"I accept 100% responsibility for my actions," Sorsby said in his statement. "I did not have control of my gambling problem and it took getting caught for me to realize that, but it was truly the best thing that could've happened to me. Because of this, I have been able to get the help I need and fully focus on my recovery.

"... I am fully committed to being the best version of myself that I can be while getting ready for the 2027 draft."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the NFL sent its teams a memo Tuesday that said Sorsby will be considered a "draft-eligible" player in 2027 and not eligible to sign a contract until that draft is over.

Tuesday's news comes after the Canadian Football League previously released a statement that said it will not allow its teams to sign Sorsby to a deal this year.

"Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL," the statement said, in part.

Sorsby started his collegiate career at Indiana and played the last two seasons at Cincinnati. He then transferred to Texas Tech for the 2026 campaign before he was ruled ineligible. A district judge granted him a temporary injunction that made him eligible to play.

That led to plenty of pushback, and Sorsby eventually decided to end his collegiate career and enter the NFL supplemental draft.

There was some thought a team might use a second-round pick on him, but the league decided not to hold the supplemental draft.

Sorbsy will instead be eligible for the 2027 NFL draft, but it will be more than a full year since his last competitive snap in college football. What's more, the 2027 draft is loaded with talent, including at the quarterback position.

Prospects such as Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Julian Sayin, CJ Carr, Darian Mensah, LaNorris Sellers and Drew Mestemaker, among others, could all play their way into first-round consideration this season.

Meanwhile, Sorsby will not play in competitive games.
