Serena Williams Loses to Maya Joint, Updated Wimbledon Women's Tennis Bracket, Results

Scott PolacekJun 30, 2026

Serena Williams' return to the Wimbledon singles competition for the 2026 tournament was short-lived.

The legend lost her opening-round match to Maya Joint on Tuesday, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3. While nobody realistically expected the 44-year-old —who has returned to the sport at a professional level this year for the first time since 2022—to add another Wimbledon title to her illustrious resume, she surely hoped to advance past the first round.

Joint had other ideas and will now face Alexandra Eala in the second round of the ladies' singles bracket, which can be found in full on the Wimbledon website.

While Joint earned the win and will have the opportunity to continue advancing in the bracket, the story was Williams' return to the sport's most famous stage. The crowd in England gave her a warm welcome, continued to support her throughout the match and were likely just thrilled with the chance to see the all-time great compete once again following retirement.

After all, her list of accomplishments includes 73 singles titles and 23 Grand Slam championships. Seven of those Grand Slam titles came at Wimbledon dating all the way back to 2002. She also won the title in 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Tuesday was her first singles match in her return after participating in the doubles competition at Queen's Club and the Berlin Open. Williams and playing partner Victoria Mboko stunned the third-seeded pairing of Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe in straight sets at Queen's Club, but their run ended when Mboko withdrew with an injury.

But a singles comeback is surely what the fans wanted to see from Williams, and they got it Tuesday at Wimbledon.

Yet it was Joint who made the initial statement with a straightforward first-set win with a single break and controlled serving. It seemed like she would cruise to a rather stress-free victory, but Williams rallied in the second set with the crowd's backing.

The American started to settle into the match when she broke Joint on two consecutive service games and then seized a 5-4 lead and 6-5 lead with her own serve. To Joint's credit, she showed resilience in the face of the newfound pressure and forced a tiebreak and a match point in it.

However, Williams stared down that match point and prevailed in the tiebreak before carrying that momentum over into the decisive set with an early break.

Still, Joint showed more of that resilience with back-to-back breaks to seize control of the third set and finally clinch the victory.
