Ben Shelton Loses to Otto Virtanen, Updated Wimbledon Men's Tennis Bracket, Results
Ben Shelton's run at Wimbledon came to a swift end on Tuesday in the first major upset of this year's tournament.
Qualifier Otto Virtanen defeated the fourth-seeded Shelton in five sets by scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (9).
During the fifth-set tiebreaker, Shelton had match point at 9-8, but Virtanen stormed back with three straight points to secure the victory.
This marks the biggest win of Virtanen's career, as he has never been ranked higher than No. 91 in the ATP singles rankings. Perย ESPN, he is now the first male Finnish player ever to defeat a top-five seed in a major during the Open Era. The 25-year-old will play in the second round against 23-year-old UK native Arthur Fery, who defeated Damir Dzumhur by scores of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.
Virtanen also advanced to the second round at Wimbledon in his debut appearance in 2024, earning his first major win against Max Purcell before losing to Tommy Paul.
Sheltonย was 4-0ย in five-set matches at Wimbledon before Tuesday's loss to Virtanen. This continues a disappointing stretch for the 23-year-old, as he reached only the second round of this year's French Open before being eliminated in a straight-sets loss to Raphael Collignon at Roland Garros. He has yet to win a tournament in 2026, and his lone singles title remains his 2025 Canadian Open victory.
Shelton's next chance to bounce back at a major will come at the US Open later this summer, so he should be motivated to improve between now and then.
