Jazz Chisholm Jr. in Concussion Protocol After Dominguez Collision, Injury Updates on Yankees Star
New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited Monday's game against the Detroit Tigers after colliding with right fielder Jasson Domínguez in the field.
The Yankees announced Chisholm "was examined by Dr. Christopher Ahmad and is currently going through concussion protocol."
The play happened in the fourth inning with both chasing a pop up from Hao-Yu Lee. They collided, and Domínguez's elbow hit Chisholm's head as the right fielder made the catch.
Oswaldo Cabrera entered the game for Chisholm.
This comes after Chisholm was ejected from Sunday's loss to the rival Boston Red Sox. He was ejected by the first-base umpire after he was called out on a third strike and spiked his helmet in frustration.
It has been a disappointing season for the second baseman to this point, as he entered Monday's game slashing .223/.306/.399 with 12 home runs and 33 RBI. So far, it has been a far cry from last season when he finished with career-high marks in home runs (31) and RBI (80).
The one silver lining from Chisholm this season has been stolen bases, as he has 24 and could be well on his way to 40-plus depending on if he misses significant time or not with this or any other setback.
New York has also been scuffling of late.
It lost its previous four games coming into Monday's contest and is just 3-8 in its last 11. It has fallen behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings as a result, although it still has the top wild-card position in the AL.
