Baker Mayfield Gives Update on Bucs Contract Extension Talks Amid NFL Rumors
Baker Mayfield provided an update regarding a potential contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday.
"I would love to be there," Mayfield said in an interview with Eddie Radosevich of SoonerScoop.com (h/t Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk). "I think both sides want to get it done. Now it's a matter of finding that middle ground and what makes both sides happy."
"We fell in love with Tampa, and it's a great place to raise kids and be around," he added. "So regardless of what happens, I think we'll spend our offseasons there. Obviously, it's a little brutally hot, but it's good for training, but it's — yeah, I want to be there long term. They treated me right, and it's the first place I've gotten to that feels like Oklahoma when it comes down to football is football, how can they put you in the best position to have success on the field, and how can they give their resources to help you out? And so, it's a great place."
The former Oklahoma standout previously revealed that he's given the Buccaneers a deadline of the start of training camp to reach an extension agreement.
Mayfield is entering the final season of a three-year contract worth $100 million that he signed with Tampa Bay in 2024. Under his current deal, he'll have a $40 million cap hit for 2026 before becoming a free agent in 2027 (via Spotrac).
Mayfield earned Pro Bowl nods in 2023 and 2024, but failed to blow past expectations during his 2025 campaign as the Buccaneers missed the playoffs with an 8-9 record.
He completed 63.2 percent of his throws for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions in 17 starts. Mayfield also averaged 6.8 yards per attempt.
Despite the lack of an extension with training camp drawing closer, the signal-caller still seems to be content in Tampa Bay.
