Sam Darnold Was 'Kinda Bummed' with Super Bowl LX Performance Despite Seahawks' Win vs. Patriots
Quarterback Sam Darnold defied expectations and proved his doubters wrong by leading the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl win last season, but he wasn't completely satisfied with how things played out.
During an appearance this week on Bussin' With The Boys (h/t Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith), Darnold suggested that he was disappointed with his own individual performance in Super Bowl LX:
"I didn't play great in the Super Bowl," Darnold said. "I missed way too many throws. We still won, our defense balled out, and I didn't turn the ball over, which helped. But dude, to win the Super Bowl that way, I was kinda bummed. I want to score like 40 points, you know what I mean? I want to go out there and ball out, and it's just, dang, I didn't play my best football in the Super Bowl? That sucks."
The Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, and the result was never in doubt, as the Pats did not score a point until the fourth quarter.
Despite the dominance of Seattle's defense in the game, it took until the fourth quarter for the Seahawks to truly put the Patriots away.
Entering the fourth quarter, the Seahawks led 12-0, and their only points came from four Jason Myers field goals.
Darnold finally got them into the end zone early in the fourth on a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end AJ Barner, and Seattle also got a defensive touchdown on a 45-yard pick six by linebacker Uchenna Nwosu.
While Darnold had fairly pedestrian numbers in the game, going 19-of-38 for 202 yards with no touchdowns, he did not throw an interception or lose a fumble, and he was sacked only once.
So although he was not necessarily the driving force behind the win, Darnold also didn't do anything to lose the game for Seattle.
Darnold had a great season for the Seahawks overall, though, throwing for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions en route to his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
Given that Darnold was labeled a bust by most after falling flat with the New York Jets as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, the fact that he has made it to this point and become a Super Bowl champion as a starter far exceeds what any pundit expected.
