Quinn Hughes Contract Talks Updated By Wild Owner Amid NHL Offseason Rumors
Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold made it clear during an interview on Minnesota Public Radio that the team is "going to re-sign" defenseman Quinn Hughes, who has one year left on his six-year, $47.1 million deal.
"First of all, Quinn Hughes is an extraordinary player and an extraordinary person," Leipold said Wednesday (h/t NHL.com).
"We had to give up a lot to get him in this past year. We are going to re-sign him. The question will be for how long. We would like to go as long as we could. He will probably want it to be a little shorter—shorter being maybe three years. We hopefully will end up at five, I don't know, and the reason I can openly talk about this is that I'm not doing the negotiating."
Hughes played his first seven-plus seasons with the Vancouver Canucks before being traded last December for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Öhgren and a 2026 first-round pick.
Hughes fared very well for the Wild. In 48 games, he posted five goals and 48 assists for 53 points and a plus-minus of plus-six. He also did quite well in the postseason with four goals and 11 assists over 11 playoff matchups.
Minnesota reached the second round of the playoffs, defeating the Dallas Stars in the first round before losing to the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche.
Hughes was also an Olympic star this year, helping Team USA to its first gold medal in men's hockey since 1980. Hughes scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Sweden in the quarterfinals.
Given Hughes' success coupled with how much Minnesota gave up for him, it's no surprise that Leipold is determined to re-sign the defenseman.
