Stratton and Cargill have been at odds dating back to last year when they were embroiled in a rivalry over the WWE Women's Championship.
Cargill beat Stratton for that title on the Nov. 1, 2025, edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, which paved the way for Tiffany to pursue the Women's United States Championship, ultimately winning it from Giulia.
Meanwhile, Jade dropped the WWE Women's Championship to Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 42, and after an unsuccessful attempt to win it back, the women's U.S. title came into her focus.
The rivalry between Stratton and Cargill was renewed when Tiffany aided Charlotte in her conflict with Jade despite Stratton and Flair having their own issues with each other.
Tiffany and Charlotte went on to team against Cargill and Michin on the June 5 episode of SmackDown with Jade and Michin prevailing.
One week later, Stratton faced Cargill again when she teamed with Chelsea Green against Jade and B-Fab, and Tiffany came out on the losing end for a second consecutive week.
A melee ensued after the bout, and it ended with Cargill, B-Fab and Michin standing over Stratton, while Jade held the women's U.S. title belt in the air.
With that, Stratton vs. Cargill became official for Night of Champions, marking the fifth televised, one-on-one match between them since last year.
They both had two wins and two draws entering Night of Champions, but Stratton broke the deadlock with a successful title defense.
