Marketa Vondrousova Suspended 4 Years After 'Refusing' Doping Test, Won Wimbledon Title in 2023

Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová was suspended for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Agency for refusing to take an anti-doping test in December, according to the Associated Press.

Vondroušová, 26, most famously won Wimbledon in 2023, defeating Ons Jabeur in the final.

She said a testing agent "rang my door late at night without properly identifying themselves" in December, causing her "mental stress."

"It is very tough for me to talk about this, but I want to be transparent with you about my mental health," she added. "The recent doping control incident happened because I reached a breaking point after months of physical and mental stress."

The ITIA's version of events was that Vondroušová "did not submit a sample when notified by a Doping Control Officer (DCO) during an out-of-competition test attempt at her home at around 8 p.m." on Dec. 3.

"Safety and welfare of players and our testers is really important to us," ITIA chief executive officer Karen Moorhouse added. "Our testers are well-trained, professional, and the gender of our testing witness always matches the player. They carry ID at all times, and players are able to verify their identity in other ways if they are ever unsure."

A tribunal determined that Vondroušová provided "no compelling justification" for refusing to take her test, though she can still appeal the decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
