Wyndham Clark Reacts to Being Heckled During U.S. Open Win Amid Scheffler's Grand Slam Pursuit

Andrew PetersJun 21, 2026

Wyndham Clark took home his second U.S. Open title on Sunday despite not having the crowd on his side.

After the win, Clark discussed battling the crowd at Schinnecock Hills while playing in the same group as Scottie Scheffler, who was going for a career grand slam.

"New York didn't really like me. I love you guys," Clark said. "But I get it. Some of it's self-deserved. I did some unfortunate things last year that I really reget, and I've been sorry multiple times and I'm still sorry. So, hopefully I can win you guys over eventually. But I get it, they root for Scottie. Grand slams only happen a few times."

Clark had a different issue with the crowd on Saturday. His late tee time meant that he finished after 8 p.m. ET, leading to a lack of fans towards the end of his round.

"Yeah, it was kind of unfortunate that we're finishing in the dark and people weren't really out there because there were some obviously key, big moments, and it did kind of get a little flat, so yeah, unfortunately," Clark said on Saturday. "Hopefully tomorrow there's a bunch of fans and stuff, but for me, it's still really important, and I still felt the moment. It's just maybe unfortunate that there weren't all the people there."

On Sunday, there was no shortage of a crowd. He received comments like "get in the bunker" and even had hecklers sing him "Happy Birthday." Several fans were removed from the crowd during the final round.

Scheffler also discussed the crowd:

Whether it was heckling or something else, Clark had his worst round of the tournament on Sunday. He came into the final round leading the pack by six shots, but five bogeys on the day allowed Scheffler and others to stay in it. Sam Burns finished just one stroke behind Clark.

Nonetheless, Clark didn't give up his lead and won his second U.S. Open title, the other coming in 2023.

As for Scheffler, he'll have to wait another year to complete the career grand slam.
