Saturday marks the third round of the 2026 U.S. Open, which is being held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, for the first time since 2018. One of the oldest golf clubs in the U.S., Shinnecock Hills' reputation as one of the most challenging in championship golf has been borne out through two rounds of play.
But the course has been kind to Wyndham Clark. The 2023 U.S. Open champion will open play on Saturday with a four-shot lead, with four players tied for second place behind him. It's one of the best opening performances in Shinnecock U.S. Open history.
Scottie Scheffler arrived as the world No. 1 and seeks the final major needed to complete the career Grand Slam. Rory McIlroy is pursuing another major championship after completing his own career Grand Slam in 2025.
Notable names including Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, J.J. Spaun, Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland missed the cut on Friday.
Spaun, the defending champion, couldn't recover on Friday from a dismal opening round. DeChambeau has now missed the cut for the third straight major championship.
