Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Talks Taking Foul Ball to Groin, Says Pain Level Was 'A Million'
New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm estimated his pain level was at "a million" after taking a batted foul ball to the groin during Thursday night's loss to the Chicago White Sox, per MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone later confirmed Chisholm had been cleared by trainers to play in Friday night's home game against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.
"I felt good about it last night. Got with him before I left, seemed like he was going to be fine," Boone said Friday afternoon. "They wanted to do some things this morning, just to make sure, but I sent the lineup out last night because I felt confident about it."
Chisholm said earlier Friday he didn't expect the incident to change his career-long habit of not wearing a cup, according to Hoch.
"I've never worn a cup. I'm not gonna change. Just an unlucky instance right there," Chisholm said, per Hoch.
Chisholm added: "If you don't trust your hands, I recommend you wear a cup."
Chisholm's hands couldn't protect him from an unlucky bounce when he was up to bat against White Sox pitcher Sean Burke in Thursday's fourth inning.
After taking contact from the ball, Chisholm spent time down on the field in visible pain before limping off as Anthony Volpe came in to pinch hit.
For now, the Yankees won't need to spend any more time without Chisholm. That will come as a relief for a club currently missing key players including Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham and Austin Wells to injury.
Chisholm is set to bat fifth and play at second base when the Yankees face the Reds at 7:05 p.m. ET Friday night in the Bronx.
