Ryan Groy to Patriots: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
The New England Patriots added to their offensive line depth Monday, acquiring guard Ryan Groy from the Chicago Bears in a trade, per Rand Getlin of NFL.com.
Field Yates of ESPN reported linebacker Matthew Wells was sent to Chicago for Groy, while his colleague Mike Reiss weighed in on the move, tweeting: "Patriots' most recent roster moves geared toward fact preseason games about to begin; 24 players sidelined in last practice; depth needed."
Groy, an undrafted rookie in 2014, started the year on the practice squad but worked his way on to the 53-man roster and started the final three games last season at left guard for the Bears. With a new scheme in place brought over by head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase, however, the team may have simply deemed Groy a poor fit for the offense.

In May, Groy revealed he had been "inspired and motivated" to establish himself as a member of the Bears following the passing of his father, per Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com:
"I definitely want to make him proud. I know he's looking over us and watching everything we do. I definitely want to show him how hard I'm working, show him what I'm doing and make sure I have no regrets because I know he would want me to have none.
There are certain things that happen in your life that motivate you and [his father's death] will add [incentive] for me to keep wanting to get on this team, keep wanting to help the team and make myself a better person and player.
"
Groy will look to carry that motivation to preseason action in New England.
With guard Dan Connolly's retirement this season and Ryan Wendell recovering from a shoulder injury, Groy gives the Pats another option on the line. He will be competing with rookies Tre' Jackson and Shaq Mason for playing time and could find himself with a starting job if he impresses the New England coaching staff over the next month.
