Caitlin Clark Compares Nike Shoe to 'Debut Album,' Caitlin 1 Details Revealed After Photos Emerge
Caitlin Clark's first signature shoe with Nike, the Caitlin 1, drops on Oct. 1.
Images of the shoe in the "Blue Racer" colorway hit social media on Wednesday.
"This is like your debut album, you want it to be killer," Clark told ESPN's Kareem Copeland about the release. "... I wanted this to be something that looked different than something that's on the shelves, but I also wanted it to be something that people are comfortable wearing. I got really crazy and expressive with the colors, and I think that kind of speaks to my love for inspiring the next generation and how they love to express themselves. A lot of it speaks to different parts of my life and different parts of my journey."
Nike said the shoe will focus on "speed, range and unpredictability," using the brand's "Opticast" technology to "reduce drag and enhance on-court movement."
As for the design, the stacked Swooshes are meant to mirror her C.C. initials, and nodes of the shoe's interior are made with No. 2s, a nod to her jersey number (22). The interior of her shoe also features messages like "Shoot More Threes," "From Anywhere" and "It was never a long shot."
"There's a lot of different Easter eggs all over the shoes that people can search through the shoe and kind of find," Clark told ESPN. "The shoe looks one way when you're watching me on the court, but when you physically hold it in your hand and see it up close, there's a lot of little discoverables for the consumer, which I think is really fun too."
Clark is the fifth current WNBA player with her own signature shoe, joining joining Angel Reese (Reebok), Breanna Stewart (Puma), Sabrina Ionescu (Nike) and A'ja Wilson (Nike). But given Clark's talent on the floor and her undeniable cultural appeal off it, one would expect her shoe debut to fly off the shelves.
